THE MANUS

THE MANUS — Artist Statement

The Manus is an ongoing visual meditation on identity, consciousness, and the possibility of becoming.

I created these figures without faces deliberately. A face gives us a name, a history, a social identity, and a way to judge one another. By removing it, I remove the immediate certainty of who they are—and leave behind the more difficult question of what they are.

Their bodies appear fragile, almost handmade, while their inner cores suggest something enduring. This tension between the organic and the constructed reflects my understanding of human existence: we are shaped by memory, vulnerability, experience, and forces we do not always understand, yet within us remains something that resists definition.

The Manus are not intended to represent a particular age, culture, gender, or species. They belong to a threshold—a space between the familiar and the unknown, between what humanity has been and what it may become. Their differences in colour and form suggest individual consciousness, while their collective presence speaks of our shared origin and interconnectedness.

I do not want The Manus to provide answers. I want them to preserve questions.

What remains of us when appearance is taken away?
Can consciousness exist beyond the identity we construct?
And if a new generation were born without the boundaries we inherited, what might it become?

The Manus is my invitation to imagine that possibility.

It is not a portrait of the future.

It is a question addressed to it.
