VARKHEN — Artist Statement
VARKHEN is an original visual mythology born from the space between the familiar and the unknown.
I imagined the Varkhen not as creatures belonging to an existing mythology, but as beings from a civilization whose origins, hierarchy, and purpose remain deliberately unexplained. Their masks conceal identity; their bodies carry traces of ritual, armor, and organic transformation. Each figure suggests a different presence within the same mysterious order.
The work explores identity, power, hierarchy, transformation, and the human fascination with the unknown. I am interested in creating characters that do not immediately reveal whether they should be understood as beautiful, threatening, sacred, artificial, or alive.
Rather than illustrating an existing story, VARKHEN begins a story that does not yet have an ending.
The darkness surrounding the figures is intentional. It removes the familiar world and leaves the viewer facing the characters without geographical, historical, or cultural certainty. What they are—and what they came from—is left open to interpretation.
VARKHEN is therefore not simply a collection of characters. It is the first fragment of a fictional world.
